Sure Fire glow plugs come in cold, medium, and hot. Not sure which to get? Generally speaking, small block engines (.15 -.18) will tend to use medium to hot glow plugs, while big block engines (.21-.32) will tend to use cooler to medium plugs.

Sure Fire’s scale of heat ranges can be used to tune a nitro engine. Hotter plugs can be used to “Advance” ignition timing, while cooler plugs can “Retard” ignition timing. For best results, start with a colder plug and work your way up adjusting fuel mixture until the optimal plug can be found for your local climate and tune. Too hot of a glow plug will result in pre-ignition issues and damage to the plug filament, which should be grey in color after one tank of fuel. If the filament has a glossy shine after 2-3 fuel tanks, then your fuel mixture may be rich, safe, but rich. If the filament is quickly distorted or broken, then the plug is too hot for the engine tune.
