Welcome to Trackside at Crash’n Bash Hobbies where we provide a family friendly environment for carpet racing and indoor crawling. Our track is 80’ x 48’ and the layout changes weekly with On-Road, Off-Road, and Oval classes. The crawler course is almost always available for use with monthly competition events. Well worth the drive, come check us out across from Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

General Information:

The main race day each week will be Saturday. Track layout is changed to the next racing type after the race Saturday, or on Sunday. This allows everyone time to come in for practice on the race layout during the week leading up to the Saturday race. The track is available for practice during business hours on all days without a race.

Click HERE for a current calendar schedule

The track and shop will open at 10am on race day. Practice is 10am until racing starts. ($10 to practice all day, any other day of the week). Racing begins at noon. This may be adjusted to an earlier time as participation increases. Any changes will be announced via our facebook group: Trackside @ Crash'n Bash.

Shorter weeknight programs may be added as participation increases. Classes and rules are posted in another section below.

Trackside Races cost $20-$10-$10. The first class will be $20, the second $10, the third $10, etc.

Racing entry fees will be paid at the front counter of the retail shop. While paying, the cashier will record what classes you'll be running, which the race director will pull from when entering names. The race director will not accept payment for racing.

Novice class or Box Stock classes will be $10. Racers above novice level are asked not to enter the Novice class, so the racing can be more enjoyable.

The track is available for practice during business hours on all days without a race. Since the layout type is changed weekly, you’ll have the week leading up to the race for practice. The price to practice is $10 for the day, or you can purchase a 10-punch card for $75. Entry to the carpet track also includes access to the crawler track.

We have MyLaps RC4 with the legacy software version 4.4. (that’s fancy talk for - works with the cheap transponders!). Crash'n Bash Hobbies sells MRT transponders (Kyosho Easlylap for Mini-Z ET001X).

This table shows the compatible transponders

Just trying out racing for the first time? Rental transponders are available for $10/each plus deposit or collateral (an ID for example)

  • 5. No smoking or alcohol in the building
  • 6. Remember - this is a family friendly environment.
  • 7. Driver’s stand is reserved for racers-only on race days (Be respectful if someone uses it by accident because they aren’t aware).
  • 8. Crawler course will be open all day during race days.
  • 9. Race entry fee also includes use of the crawler course all day. (So bring your crawler!)
  • 10. Pit spaces will be shared between carpet racers and crawler drivers.
  • 11. Pit mats required at all spaces.
  • 12. Only approved vehicles on the carpet track:
    • a. No crawlers, 1/8th scale anything, 4wd monster trucks.
    • b. Ask before putting down a remote control vehicle on the carpet.
    • c. You are welcome to try driving your carpet cars on the crawler course.
    • d. Make sure to clean your tires after.
  • 13. No burnouts on the carpet. The carpet will melt and be ruined in that spot
  • 14. Only 2 tire compounds allowed - SXT 3.0 Regular (SXT00030), and SXT 3.0 Lite (SXT00035).
  • 15. Clean off your footwear before entering the carpet track! PLEASE!
  • 16. Drivers are required to corner marshal after their race. There will be a 2-lap penalty off the BEST ROUND QUALIFYING for each round skipped.
  • 17. Only drivers are allowed to corner marshal. If you need to find someone to marshal for you, they need to be a registered driver attending the current event. Non-participants are not allowed to corner marshal at any time UNLESS expressly decided by the race director/track owner.
  • 18. Physical violence (in all cases) either threatened or acted on is NEVER allowed. Participants will be asked to leave without refund.
  • 19. If you choose to leave an event, you are doing so on your own accord. There will be no refunds.
  • 20. The race director is the judge on any disputes.
  • 21. The owners reserve the right to allow or disallow anyone on the property as they see fit.

On the Track

  • 1. No burnouts on the carpet. The carpet will melt and be ruined in that spot
  • 2. No rough driving.
  • 3. No wet tires - remove traction compound at your pit 10 minutes before driving.
  • 4. Drivers are to pull their cars when they are individually called “done” in a race, UNLESS doing so would impede a driver still on the clock.
  • 5. Marshals are to stay in their positions until all cars are shut down.
  • 6. Drivers and marshals are expected to do everything they can to keep themselves and their equipment safe. As a marshal, always have your head “on a swivel”. Off the clock racers are expected to be mindful of marshals that may be out of their position.
  • 7. Slower drivers are expected to move over for faster cars. The rule of thumb is “Two Corners”. When a faster car is within a corner from your position, please move over within the next 2 corners.
  • 8. Mains:
    • a. The race director has full control over restarts.
    • b. You’re allowed to hold your position if it's for track position, you're being lapped for the first time, #4 under qualifiying applies past these circumstances.
    • c. In the event of a crash, drivers are expected to allow traffic to pass and only re-enter the race in a way that’s safe and does not impede other drivers.

Racing etiquette is on and off the track...PLEASE READ (as written by Matt Murphy)

I'm going to step onto the soap box that is social media, in an effort to address something that I feel has become a major issue in our sport of RC Racing. Now this problem is something that I have noticed across the board, at the local, regional, and national level. Now what could possibly be so bad that I feel the need to step up and be the one to address it? Driver Etiquette or the lack thereof. You could also call it courtesy, class, sportsmanship or numerous other things. You might wonder what I am getting at... well read on.

Driver Etiquette - This describes HOW you race with others. Etiquette isn't talent based. You can be less talented than other racers, yet exhibit driver etiquette. Etiquette is more directly related to your racing IQ, as well as your attitude.

Respect - This is earned, not given. How you race others will ultimately figure into the respect you have earned, and the respect you are shown on and off of the track. Respect from your peers is one of the greatest accomplishments you can achieve in any part of life, especially in racing.

Courtesy - Some days, you are the fast guy. Other days, you are in the way. Courtesy in racing is when you race according to your potential performance on any given day. Courtesy is when you race your fellow racers the way you would like to be raced.

Sportsmanship - Competing to the best of your ability, while racing clean and handling both victory and defeat with grace, style, and dignity.

What I have seen is a complete lack of Sportsmanship. Racers who blast through a competitor on the track without passing clean. And then you hear the obligatory "Sorry Man!" while they keep on racing around the track with zero consequence for their poor sportsmanship. Well, frankly, I call bullshit! If you were sorry, you would pull your car over out of the race line, and wait for the driver you just took out to get going. Whether that ends up being a self imposed 2 second or 20 second penalty... if you are truly sorry, and have any bit of class, PULL OVER. This is part of driver etiquette. Etiquette or the lack theoreof however isn't exactly the fault of today's racer. Etiquette is not taught the way it used to be. Track owners simply do not teach etiquette like they did in the old days. Why? Track owners are now afraid of running customers off, so they do not make rough driving calls.

Racers who have earned and race with respect know that when it's not their day to be the fast guy out front, that you give up the preferred line when faster cars approach. That courtesy goes a long way to earn the respect of the top racers. That respect will then be repaid on a day in which you are the fast guy passing slower cars. A little bit of give and take goes a long way for everyone.

If you are faster than another racer, give them a few corners to have a reasonable opportunity to give up the preferred line. If they don't make an effort to move, you now have a choice to make. Pass clean, or move them out of the way. I'm old school, I will make you earn a pass for position. However if I am getting lapped, especially if it's not the first time in a particular race, I will move. I have spent the last 19 years trying to earn the respect of the fastest racers in the country. I take pride in my ability to give and take while losing the least amount of time possible. It is becoming a lost art in my opinion. Knowing when, where, and how to pull over with minimal loss of time is an invaluable skill.

So what do I propose to fix this problem? Simple..... I call out the veteran racers. I ask you to take 2 newer racers under your wing, and teach them how to race with etiquette. Teach them how to earn respect. Teach them how to race with Sportsmanship.

Lastly, I call out all of you reading this. Next time you run someone over on the race track, pull over and wait for them. Show them that your apology is real. Show them you want to race with class, and that winning is less important than competing with good sportsmanship. Changing the RC racing culture starts with each and every one of us admitting that there is a problem, and making an effort to correct the problem.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and I hope that together we can make a difference in the quality of rc racing. Make RC Racing Great Again!

Matt "The MurfDogg" Murphy
